What is a Final Grade Certificate, and do I need one?
If you bought a new home in Edmonton, the City requires your lot grading to be approved. A Final Grade Certificate is a certified as-built plan — prepared by a professional acceptable to the City, such as an Alberta Land Surveyor — showing your lot graded to the approved plan on sod or topsoil, with proper drainage. Without approval, your builder may hold back your landscaping deposit. We handle topsoil, final grading, and coordinate the certificate process.
How long do I have to get final grade approval in Edmonton?
According to the City of Edmonton, the Final Grade Approval application is initiated by submitting a Lot Grading Certificate within 18 months of the building permit. Lot grading in Edmonton is governed by Drainage Bylaw 18093 — so it pays to start early and not leave it until your builder deposit deadline is close. Source: City of Edmonton — Final Grade Approval.
How long does the City inspection take, and what if my lot doesn’t pass?
According to the City of Edmonton, an inspector usually visits within 10 business days of submission. If deficiencies are found, they must be corrected within 60 days and a re-inspection arranged by calling 311 (fees may apply). We grade to the approved plan in the first place so corrections are far less likely to be needed.
Should I do final grade before or after sod?
Final grade comes first. Sod laid before your grade is approved may have to be lifted if corrections are needed. The usual order is: rough grade approval → topsoil & final grade → certificate/City approval → sod and remaining landscaping.
Are you a real local contractor, or a referral service?
A real one. Kruse Landscaping Ltd. is an incorporated, owner-operated Edmonton company — you deal directly with owner Anthony Kruse, who prices the job, does the work, and walks the finished yard with you. You’re not handed off to an unknown third-party contractor.
When is the best time to install sod in Edmonton?
Sod can go down through most of the growing season — spring through early fall — as long as it gets consistent water while it roots. Fresh sod needs frequent watering for the first couple of weeks; we’ll leave you with a simple watering schedule.
Do you work with home builders?
Yes. Beyond one-off homeowner jobs, we complete full builder-requirement landscaping packages for new homes — grading, topsoil, sod, trees, and shrubs to spec.
How much does a project cost?
It depends on yard size, access, materials, and how much prep is needed — which is why every quote starts with a site visit and measurements. Quotes are always free and itemized, so you know exactly what you’re paying for before you commit to anything.
How long have you been landscaping?
10 years. Kruse Landscaping Ltd. is an incorporated Edmonton business, and most of our work is right here in Edmonton — final grade, sod, builder requirements, and paver patios.
Do paver patios hold up in Alberta winters?
Yes — when the base is done right. We excavate, compact a proper gravel base, and level a bedding layer before laying pavers, which is what keeps a patio flat through freeze–thaw cycles.
